Two Smart Guys Discuss Smart Objects

Over at O'Reilly Digital Media, Derrick Story has posted an interview he did with Deke at last Spring's Photoshop World, wherein Deke enlightens O'Reilly's evangelist on the mysteries of smart objects. It's a fun conversation, with Deke the graphics guru and Photoshop connoiseur enlightening Derrick the photographer and Photoshop anarchist. (I like the audio only when my eyes need a break from the screen, or you know, I'm driving a car.) OK, so this picture is actually from last month in Las Vegas (y'all are going to figure it out from the dekePod logo on the screen anyway). But it is, in fact, Deke and Derrick, and they are talking about something related to Photoshop. It could be smart objects. And my shots from Orlando were apparently affected by humidity.

It just so happens these are the two guys I'm putting out there for my Photoshop CS4 book offerings this fall. You all know what Deke has to offer, and the Adobe Photoshop CS4 One-on-One book will be ready as soon as the project launches (thanks to Deke's amazing amazing team--Carol, Spink, Ron, Julie, David, Toby--woohoo!). Derrick's book, The Photoshop CS4 Companion for Photographers, will be day-and-date with CS4 as well, providing photographers with a streamlined plan for Photoshop that gives them everything they need, and nothing they don't. See? I gotcha covered. 'Cause I know smart when I see it.

Photoshop World Vegas Keynote Video Available

Hey all, just back from forever on the road (Deke didn't even mention the dekePod recording session we had in SF; I think he wants you to think that these works of brilliance pop fully formed out of his Zeus-like head and land on iTunes). As you know, Photoshop World happened. As you also know, you can get a sneak peek at the CS4 launch by registering here. But I also wanted to point you to a video of the key sections of the PSWorld keynote posted by Adobian Terry White over at the Creative Suite Podcast. When you watch it, you'll see there was a bunch of stuff about Lightroom 2 that neither Deke nor I mentioned ('cause you know, we're so of the moment we can't be bothered with a 2-week-old application, we have to talk about the ones that aren't even here yet!). It also includes John Loiacono and our Friend of dekeWorld John Nack demo-ing juicy bits of Photoshop "Next" live.

One little instructional thing about Terry's link... Read more »

Join Us at Photoshop World, Free

Well, free once you get yourself to Las Vegas, baby. But if you are going to be in or around Sin City on September 5th or 6th, come by the O'Reilly booth at Photoshop World and say hi. Print out the attached pass for free entry for two to the expo floor. Although you won't be able to attend Deke's world-famous sessions without a full pass (which you can learn about here), there's plenty to do and learn on the expo floor. (In fact, NAPP, Microsoft, and Nikon all have theaters where many of our friends hold on-the-floor sessions.) Deke will be appearing in the booth for an interview with O'Reilly Evangelist, Derrick Story. (I'll post the time here once we finalize the schedule.) Although as you know, Deke is quite shy and retiring, he's also very much in love with his fans. Especially you fabulous people. I'll be there too, doing my booth duty, so definitely introduce yourself as a beloved inhabitant of dekeVille.

Click on the image below to download the pass. Then print. Then come. If it could be simpler, let us know.

Bring It On: Team Deke-ster Spotted Answering Digital Photo Questions

You know if a guy's got the Deke Seal of Approval, he knows a thing or two. Add to that a willingness to answer all the digital imaging questions that come his way and you have the intrepid Tim Grey. (Well, he apparently doesn't answer any of the idiotic questions, but I think Tim told me that in confidence.) Tim's collaborating with Deke on the upcoming Channels and Masks One-on-One book due later this year, but right now he has a new book coming out this week called Take Your Best Shot: Tim Grey Tackles Your Digital Darkroom Questions that he wrote all on his own. It's a highly readable, informative compilation of the questions Tim has been diligently, fearlessly answering from readers of his DDQ column for several years.
